| Top 10 Tips for Caring for Silk Ties |
- Always unknot your tie before you put it away to avoid permanent creases and wrinkles.
- Remove your necktie by reversing the knot rather than pulling it loose and putting stress on the fabric.
- Do not make your knots too tight as it can damage the silk.
- Store your ties rolled (narrow end first) or on a rack specifically designed for tie storage.
- Allow your ties to rest for 2-3 days before you wear them again to allow the fabric to smooth and relax.
- Keep your ties stain-free. Tuck a napkin into your shirt collar or, if appropriate, remove it completely to protect it from stains.
- If you do get a stain, treat it as soon as possible with a little club soda and a clean cloth. For grease stains, sprinkle with talcum powder and gently brush away once the grease has absorbed.
- For best results remove wrinkles and creases with a hand steamer rather than an iron that can dull the luster of the silk and crush the rolled edges. Leaving ties rolled loosely for a few days can also help smooth out wrinkles.
- If you use tie pins or tacks, always insert them through the back of your tie to prevent making holes and picks where they are visible.
- Always spot clean your ties rather than dry clean. Many dry cleaners use a press that can cause permanent damage to your tie leaving it looking flat and dull.
